Exploring the impact of AI & technology on the future of work and society

Google launched a new initiative, “AI Works for America,” on 15 July in Pennsylvania, with the intention of helping workers and small businesses acquire essential AI skills. This comes at a time of growing concern about AI-related job displacement, and as we know AI is inevitable so readying for it as individuals is key.

This programme will give foundational AI concepts, ethical considerations, prompt engineering, and data analysis training. Google’s say they want to democratise access to AI knowledge, ensuring it is not limited to large corporations or technology companies. All sounds very laudable!

Pennsylvania has been chosen as the launch location as it has a really good mix of both traditional industries and emerging technology sectors. Google intends to demonstrate how AI can be applied across various industries and economic contexts. The initial phase will give insight into how or whether to go ahead with this on a full US or global basis.

“AI Works for America” is aiming to be proactive in assisting workers in realising then new skills that will future proof their careers.

This reflects broader industry and governmental conversations about the role of AI in employment, workforce development, and economic competitiveness. There is a need for Big Tech and Policymakers to get creative here. As the programme progresses, it may offer insights into how effective large-scale and large corporate AI training can be in addressing workforce transitions in the context of technological advancement for SMEs and even Public Sector. One to keep an eye on.
